Co-Curricular Summary Booklet
Table of Contents
| Purpose of Handbook |
|
As educational programs grow, improve, and better train students, there exists a need to provide a balanced program of co-curricular activities to gain experience using this new found knowledge.
To meet this challenge, it is important to plan, organize, and set goals that will enable students the most effective means of total growth.
This handbook should provide the basis for such direction, and further communicate the role of co-curricular programs in the total educational program.
Dr. Jeff Athey
Dodgeville High School Principal
We believe the Dodgeville co-curricular program is an extension of a balanced educational program which allows students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in school to real-life situations. It is through this interaction and systematic guidance of students in every day environments that we can provide first-hand experiences, test their skills, provide successes, and offer an effective means to prepare students for total growth.
Co-curricular activities (e.g., athletics, band, cheerleading, etc.) all contribute to the total growth of a young person providing these activities are conducted from a balanced educational perspective. Research, however, clearly indicates that those students who have participated in one or more co-curricular activities during the school year find greater satisfaction while in school, achieve at a higher level, and ultimately are successful in their chosen field of work.
The educational challenge is to produce a student who has learned how to learn, who knows the ultimate security lies, not in possessing knowledge because it will surely change, but in the ability to seek it, and then use it.

2005-06 was another great year for the Dodgeville High School Band. The Marching Band performed a Ray Charles show at all home football games. The pep band had the best attendance ever and performed at ALL winter sports home events. The concert band continued its tradition of excellence by receiving a superior rating once again at Large Group Festival. The highlight of the year was the spring break trip to Florida where the band had a professional recording experience, playing the sound track to Aladdin in a real Disney recording studio and gave a performance to remember at EPCOT Center.

The 2005-06 Senior Class officers were:
President- Cassie Clayton
Vice-President- Page Mieritz
Secretary- Dana Neil
Treasurer- Kari Peterson
Events held through the year:
Homecoming- This went very well, although the Harris
Park usage cause some
confusions until it was resolved. Five girls built the class
float and did a very nice job
with it. The skit was also well done and well-received.
T-shirt fundraiser- This went
horribly. I was displeased with the company I used. Very
few students ordered a t-shirt. It ended up costing us money
instead of raising funds.
Concession stand fundraisers- The
Senior Class worked some winter sports concession
stands. I actually had parents supervise four of the five we
were assigned. I arranged
workers and contacted the parents with what to do and what
time to arrive. Mr.
Hawkinson does an excellent job in providing sponsors with
this opportunity.
Graduation Planning- I actually
had to do much less of this than expected. I arranged
faculty helpers. We did have to buy flowers this year which
I arranged.
Thoughts on year’s events/next year’s plans and goals:
I plan to do as much as possible through my classroom and
office mailbox. I want to
never have a full class meeting, if possible. I also do not
want students in the office for
anything related to senior class activities. Nominating and
voting can be done through
my classroom and the announcements. I will do t-shirts again
if students express an
interest. I have been informed of another company to use.
Now I know I need to get a
written cost in advance before orders are placed. If the
money is needed, I will do the
concession stand again still involving parents to act as
supervisors. Graduation planning
went well and will be easier this next year. I’ll have fewer
questions. I’ll see on the 4th
how the flowers turn out, and then after that, decide whether
or not to use Rustic Floral
again.

Mock trials are structured like a “real” court trial and follow the same rules that allow the participants to get a hands-on learning experience. This experience can help people better understand how the legal system works and what roles judges, lawyers, bailiffs, juries, and witnesses play in the system. From October to February, mock trial teams prepare to argue a fictional case against other teams.
Once again, the team participated in Iowa County Government Day. Each year, Circuit Court Judge William D. Dyke invites all Iowa County schools to visit the Iowa County Circuit Courthouse in Dodgeville to learn about the country government. Along with presentations and tours, the Dodgeville and Mineral Point Mock Trial teams compete against one another, with Judge Dyke presiding. The American Legion Unit 97 then hosts a luncheon, along with the other units in Iowa County. The team was unable to compete in the regional tournament.

Overall, the musical went very well this year. I am told Friday night was a larger crowd than normal. Members of the community assisted in playing in the pit orchestra. There was an excellent collaboration between staff members in putting together this musical. New ideas were discussed for next year. The goal is to keep involvement up and possibly look into student directors.

Accomplishments:
Each class (e.g., Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, & Senior)
selected 4 students to serve
on this advisory council. These students were not class
officers or students who served
on the Student Council. They represented an excellent
crossover of students from the
student body giving the principal a “pulse of the school.”
This cabinet met once every
quarter in the high school library. The meeting periods were
staggered so that students
would not consistently miss the same class. During the block
that we met, the principal
talked about things that were “timely”, “current”, or “of
concern” so that students were
made knowledgeable of these things and could also provide
feedback. Likewise, the
students contributed agenda topics and these were discussed
at the meetings. At the
end of the school year, each student was presented with a
certificate from the principal
signifying his/her involvement and contributions.

trip,
including butter braids, candlelight ski/hike at Governor
Dodge State Park.

Tomorrow
workshop in Eagle River.
5. Working on next summer’s trip to Costa Rica with several Dodgeville students
as well
as a few from outside our community.
6. Plant fundraiser to occur over the summer, plants not big enough for sale due
to long,
non-sunny, and cold period in the greenhouse. Students will
be selling them at the
farmer’s market when the time comes.

Special Olympics had a successful program during the 2005-2006 school year.
October through December found 8 Olympians busily
practicing for Area Bowling
competition. The team did extremely well, qualifying 6 athletes for Regional
competition. At Regional competition, 3 athletes qualified for States in
Milwaukee. These athletes and their families went to State and thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. Dodgeville earned two 2nd place medals and a 4th
place ribbon.
In January, the Wisconsin Badgers had a Special Olympics Day. Three families registered to attend this event and received discounted tickets. The school van was scheduled for transporting individuals.
Track practices began in March—indoors initially at DES, then on the practice field prior to competition. Only two athletes participated in Area games in May. Both qualified for State tournaments but elected not to go due to the proximity of graduation this year.
The Special Olympics season was capped off with a family picnic. The weather cooperated, and the rain held off the day we met at Harris Park. A good time was had by all attending.

Our VICA Club was again successful this year. We continue to grow the club and expect many new members in this new organization during the coming year. We started VICA Week this year, and I hope this will continue as a tradition at Dodgeville High School.
Next year, we are looking into doing more of a group project as a club. We are considering designing and building a biodiesel processor and using used French fry grease to make fuel. The kids seem very excited about the idea.
We had a fantastic year in the Tech. Ed. program. We continued to see a more diverse collection of students enter the Technology Education area. We pushed and enforced safety very much this year and we are pleased to say we had no serious accidents in the Tech. Ed. area.
Our “Girls’ Night In” was a grand success again this year and we look forward to next year. We continue to emphasize gender equity in our area. In some classes, there are more girls than guys.
We were very pleased to see the wood shop painted and refurbished this year. Our students worked very hard moving equipment and repainting machines. There are still a few items we have yet to complete. Some will be done over the summer and some will be completed when I return in the fall.
As we leave for the summer, the shops are cleaned and ready for use when we return in the fall. We look forward to an exciting year to come.
